Trygga idrottsmiljöer inom hästsektorn i Sverige och Norge

The equine sector involves some of the most popular sports and lifestyle-oriented hobbies in Sweden and Norway with many physical and social benefits. However, the equine sector can at times be a risk environment where access to the horse enables power, authority, and control for some people, whereas other people become subordinated, dependent, and vulnerable. Ultimately, this context can facilitate harassment and abuse. In recent years, several cases of sexual harassment and abuse (SHA), especially towards young girls, within equine environments have been reported; urging improvement of protection and safeguarding. Unfortunately, there is no research about SHA within the equine sector to inform practices against SHA. Thus, the research aims for the proposed study are to:

1. examine the experiences, prevalence, and characteristics of SHA within the equine sector
2. examine risk factors and grey-areas that can enable SHA within the equine sector
3. provide directions for safeguarding and protection based on the achieved knowledge in collaboration with the sector.

A mixed methodological approach will be adopted one quantitative survey study and one qualitative interview study to generate comprehensive knowledge. To understand the social processes, characteristics, and ambiguous boundaries that can enable SHA within the equine context, the data collection and analysis will be guided by a holistic conceptual framework that comprise SHA and related grey-areas between consensual/appropriate and nonconsensual/inappropriate behaviours.

The safeguarding of horses and humans requires shared efforts and directions based on collaboration within the equine sector. This project is an initiative to contribute to such collaboration by aligning research, policy, and practice. The dissemination of the results will progress knowledge which enables for equine sector stakeholders in Sweden and Norway to target prevention, intervention, and resources more effectively. The dissemination of the results will, in itself, cultivate openness and promote conversation.

En socialt hållbar hästsektor tar ansvar för välfärden för såväl häst som människa. Tillgången till hästen kan möjliggöra makt, auktoritet och kontroll för vissa, medan det gör andra människor beroende, underordnade och sårbara. Denna kontext kan vara grogrund för utnyttjande, trakasserier och övergrepp – ett problem som fått stor offentlig uppmärksamhet på senare år. Forskning om att skydda barn och skapa trygga idrottsmiljöer i allmänhet har ökat, men sexuella trakasserier och övergrepp samt relaterade gråzoner inom hästsport har inte studerats. Baserat på kombinerade forskningsmetoder bidrar detta projekt med nya kunskaper om sexuella trakasserier och övergrepp för att bidra till en trygg, socialt hållbar hästsektor i Sverige och Norge (inklusive hästsporterna trav, galopp, islandshäst och ridsport).

Syftet med projektet är att:
• undersöka upplevelser, förekomst och karaktärsdrag av STÖ inom hästsektorn,
• undersöka riskfaktorer och gråzoner som kan möjliggöra STÖ inom hästsektorn,
• bidra med information och rekommendationer för trygghetsarbetet inom hästsektorn baserat på studiens resultat.

Projektet bygger på ett samarbete mellan hästsektor och akademi för att utveckla åtgärder för trygghet samt förebygga utsatthet mer effektivt genom att sammanföra forskning, policy och praktik.
