Entry requirements

An applicant meets the general entry requirements if he or she:

Final school grades corresponding to the level English 6 within the Swedish education system is a general entry requirement. Applicants that do not have grades from a Swedish upper-secondary education shall verify proficiency corresponding to the level English 6 by means of an approved international language test: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (The International English Language Testing System), or Cambridge ESOL, (English Language Assessment), in accordance with the requirements at Universityadmissions.se. At this website, exemption from the requirement about verification is also regulated. Applicants with a second-cycle degree from a university or programme with English as a first language do not need to verify proficiency in English by means of an international language test.

GIH has no general specific entry requirements for admission to the doctoral programme. However, certain entry requirements may be specified for a particular doctoral project. Such requirements are specified in the advertisement of the doctoral position.

The general entry requirements shall be fulfilled at the specified time of admission to the doctoral programme. The time frame for admission is specified in the advertisement of the doctoral position. GIH may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant, if there are special grounds.

Selection

In selecting between applicants who meet the requirements, their ability to benefit from the doctoral programme shall be taken into account. An important basis of assessment is the specialisation of the credits within the masters/second-cycle programme and the quality of the advanced level thesis.

The applicants are assessed according to the following criteria:

  • knowledge of relevance to the thesis specific subject within the field of sports, physical activity and health,   
  • theoretical awareness and knowledge of appropriate methods,
  • analytical competence,
  • ability for critical thinking and to formulate problem statements,
  • communicative competence in speech and writing,
  • awareness of ethical aspects of research.

Application documents

The application for admission to the doctoral programme at GIH shall include the following attested documents:

  • Degree certificate and other documents proving that the general entry requirements are fulfilled.
  • The copy of the degree certificate shall be enclosed in the original language and in an English translation by an authorized translator (the following languages do not need translation: Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, English, German or French).
  • If the entry requirements are not fulfilled on application to the doctoral programme, the applicant shall enclose a certificate issued by the education provider stating the expected date of graduation.
  • Advanced level thesis (magister or master thesis). Accepted languages are Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, English, German or French.
  • A certificate verifying English language proficiency by means of an approved international language test (TOEFL, IELTS, ESOL (for applicants that do not have grades from a Swedish upper-secondary education or have a second-cycle degree from a university or program with English as a first language),
  • CV and a short motivation letter for the application with special attention given to the educational background and suggestions for at least two references,
  • Project description (if required). Instructions are provided in the specific advertisement,
  • Certificate of external funding (if required).
